Experimental Animal Center

The Experimental Animal Center (EAC) is the structural unit of the University of Bern carrying the responsibility for in-vivo research. In its multispecies, decentralized animal facilities, the EAC aims at providing state of the art use and care of the animal programs. The 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace), the “culture of care” and compliance to guidelines and regulations are cornerstones of the EAC strategy.

Areas of responsibility
  • Managing the infrastructure and equipment of the animal facilities to comply with internal, national and international guidelines.
  • Maintaining inventory, equipment, facility set-up, and records relating to operations, ensuring proper functioning of facility equipment, and coordinating equipment repair and maintenance Key contact with providers
  • Ensure appropriate staff technical training, supervision and evaluation; leading a team of 10 people
  • Verify that adequate supplies of expendables are available at all times to support the barrier husbandry operations and the maintenance of facilities
  • Assistance with quality assurance methods to check the hygiene of the animal facilities, the water quality and the sterilisation chambers
  • Develop and revise animal facility SOPs in conjunction with the facility managers. Ensure adherence to SOPs, quality assurance guidelines and protocols
  • Central support and involvement in the further development of the procurement system
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, a related field or a university degree in a technical profession related to the healthcare industry
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in animal husbandry facilities or veterinary medicine or human medicine
  • Experience with Procurement is an advantage
  • Initiative, communicative, resilient and service-oriented leadership personality
  • Willingness to collaborate with various interest groups and develop innovations
  • Very good English and/or German skills; other languages are an advantage
